The Group 3 Celebration Cup over 1400 meters is the centerpiece of Sunday's program, and the betting public will inevitably gravitate toward #6 LITTLE PARADISE (GLD Line: 1/2). Coming off a Group 3 win over this distance, LITTLE PARADISE retains the services of Zac Purton and should eat up the betting pools. However, at a GLD Line of 11/1, we're looking towards HELIOS EXPRESS to bounce back.
HELIOS EXPRESS brings a massive 114 GLD Speed Rating into this race, the highest overall GLD Rating on the card. Look at his past performance lines from earlier this year: he was throwing down 118, 115, and 111 GLD figures while chasing home elite champions in Group 1 and Group 2 company over 1200m and 1400m. In his last race he was every bit as good as the G1 Chairman's Sprint Prize field, except for the Michael Jordan of Hong Kong (KA YING RISING) who was setting track records. Piloted by Andrea Atzeni, his PCK (Pack/Stalker) running style allows him to sit comfortably right in behind the speed and wait for his lane to open. Our GLD Line projects the public will let him drift out to 11/1 due to his recent results and expected heavy chalk in the race. Sprints at Sha Tin are tactical races, especially with this rail out to its C+3 configuration (the furthest out they set the rail). SALON S is a pure front-running speedball (SPD style) who reeled off four consecutive victories last season before stepping into Class 2 on April 26. In that race, he set a scorching pace and battled bravely to finish 4th, stopping the clock in a blistering 1:20.80 and earning an 85 GLD Speed Figure.
Carrying just 124 lbs with Matthew Poon in the irons and adding a tongue tie (TT1) for the first time, SALON S owns a clear Pace Advantage on our metrics. The tongue tie keeps the horse's tongue snug to their bottom jaw so it doesn't block their airway or slip over the bit. For handicappers, this means a runner with wide open airways coming down the stretch ensuring plenty of oxygen is taken in to fuel the athlete. FORZA TORO steps up into Class 3 after capping off his summer campaign with a sharp victory over 1650 meters. Moving into higher company might scare off casual punters, but it gives FORZA TORO a massive handicap advantage: he drops down to a featherweight 122 lbs, getting considerable weight concessions from the top contenders in the field.
Look at his Sha Tin 1400-meter line from April 12 on the past performances card above: he was taken way back to 13th from barrier 10, swung wide into the lane, and unleashed a ferocious rally to miss by just 0.2 lengths in a snappy 1:22.01. That closing kick proves he relishes the sweeping Sha Tin straight. Piloted by Luke Ferraris, his C (Closer) style should get an ideal stalking tow behind what projects to be an honest pace.
