The Physics of Korean Sand: Track Moisture Mechanics
Unlike turf surfaces, Korean tracks consist of natural sea sand. The KRA measures and publishes surface and deep-cushion moisture percentages (%) prior to every race.
Moisture Classification Tiers & Pace Bias Impact
1%–5% Moisture: Dry & Deep Cushion
Heavy Sand • Stamina DrainLike running on loose beach sand. Hooves sink deep, reducing propulsion. Frontrunners tire out in the straight, allowing deep closers to capitalize.
6%–9% Moisture: Standard Cushion
Balanced Racing ConditionsBaseline speed conditions with minimal bias. Pure class and jockey pace judgment dictate outcomes.
10%–14% Moisture: Yielding / Accelerated
Accelerated Times • Pace AdvantageMoisture packs the sand, increasing surface rebound. Winning times improve by 0.5s–1.0s, and tactical early speed becomes tough to reel in.
15%–20%+ Moisture: Muddy / Speed Highway
Ice Rink • Severe Rail BiasThe track acts like an ice rink. Kickback turns into heavy mud clods blinding chasers. Inside rail runners (Gates 1–3) wire the field over 75% of the time.
