Sha Tin October 1 Preview: Early Favourite Audit — Bankers, Traps & Pace Analysis (National Day Cup 2026)
There is nothing quite like Sha Tin on National Day.
Over 100,000 passionate racing fans packing the grandstands, the roar echoing as the gates fly open, and an electric 11-race holiday card headlined by the Group 3 National Day Cup down the straight at 1000 meters. For horseplayers, this is one of the premier betting fixtures on the global calendar.
With less than 48 hours to go until post time, we are at that pivotal stage in the handicapping lifecycle where early lines and barrier draws have just dropped. When you handicap with our GLD Speed Figures and the GLD Line (our proprietary market forecast of where post-time odds will actually settle), your job becomes much easier. Today, we’re going to conduct an Early Market Audit and separate the good chalk from the bad so you know which races you should be diving deep on.
Let's break down the horses expected to dominate the betting boards for Thursday's National Day Cup meeting at Sha Tin, expose the chalk to avoid, and scout out races to focus on as the handicapping process gets underway.

How to Handicap Sha Tin
Sha Tin’s Course A (the rail setting for Thursday) is the widest track configuration available, offering an expansive 30.5-meter racing strip and a cavernous 430-meter homestretch. Unlike the tight, claustrophobic bends of Happy Valley where leaders can steal races on the rail, Course A at Sha Tin is renowned for fair, true-run finishes.
When handicapping Sha Tin, keep these things in mind:
- Respect the Straight 1000m Outside Bias: In straight races like the National Day Cup (Race 3), don't automatically discount high barrier numbers. The outer stands-side rail is historically faster and provides cleaner galloping room.
- Beware of 135 lb Top Weights in Lower Classes: In the lower classes (Class 5 and Class 4), horses carrying top weight (133–135 lbs) must possess a speed figure well above par to overcome the weight handicap. When a favourite like #1 SUNNY Q carries 135 lbs with a sub-par rating, look deeper for good prices and lighter jockeys.
- Use the GLD Line to Find Value: Our top picks will always identify the best value, according to our predictions model, as our “Best Bet”. If you already have your own picks, use the GLD Line to help sort which of your top choices should command more of your betting dollars.
