Tenno Sho Autumn 2026 Preview: Ranking The Contenders

174th Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1) | Tokyo Racecourse (2000m Turf) | Sunday, November 1, 2026 — Quantifying all 17 probable contenders with Projected GLD Speed Figures and Late Pace ratings.

Tenno Sho Autumn 2026 Preview: Ranking The Contenders
Tokyo Racecourse (2000m Turf) — Host of the 174th Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1) on Sunday, November 1, 2026

There is nothing quite like autumn G1 season in Japan, and with the probables list now out for the 174th running of the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) on Sunday, November 1 at Tokyo Racecourse, we finally get our first real sneak peek at how this 2,000-meter turf showdown is shaping up. If you have ever handicapped Tokyo's 2000-meter turf configuration, you know it is one of the most demanding tactical puzzles in world racing: the gate sits tucked back in the 1800-meter pocket chute with barely 100 meters to the first turn, giving wide draws a quick geometry problem early before the field swings onto the backstretch and squares up for that famous 525.9-meter uphill homestretch.

When playing on numbers in a race this deep, you have to trust your process—and you have to make sure your database isn't missing half the globe. Instead of ranking these 17 probable contenders by their raw prep race figures alone, we ran every runner's full multi-start profile to generate their Projected Tenno Sho GLD Rating. Even more importantly, we linked our JRA records with our Hong Kong database at Sha Tin. Why does that matter? Because defending champion MASQUERADE BALL hasn't run on a domestic JRA racecard since finishing second in last November's Japan Cup (121 GLD) as a three-year-old carrying 56 kg. A domestic-only lookup misses his spring trip to Sha Tin—where he finished second in the G1 FWD Queen Elizabeth II Cup at 2000 meters carrying 57 kg (126 lbs) for a 113 HKJC GLD Speed Figure (116 on the JRA G1 par scale) before shipping to Ascot—and unfairly docks him for a weight jump he has already handled. By uniting his Sha Tin and Tokyo numbers (along with GIOVANNI's fifth-place effort in that same Sha Tin QEII Cup), we get the sharpest apples-to-apples projection on the board.

Before we dive into the 1-through-17 rankings, keep one historical number taped to the top of your screen: 110. When we back-tested the last five renewals of the Tenno Sho Autumn (2021–2025), the five winners (MASQUERADE BALL at 112, DO DEUCE at 112, EQUINOX at 113 and 112, and EFFORIA at 110) averaged a 112 Pre-Race Projected GLD Rating—and 14 of the last 15 horses (93%) to hit the Trifecta walked into the paddock projecting at 110 or higher. Nine horses on this year's probables list clear that 110 bar, led by a three-way logjam at 116—while one very famous mare sits underneath the cutline at 109.

2. Contender-by-Contender Analytical Breakdown (Ranked #1 to #17, Best to Worst)

Tier 1: The Championship Co-Favorites (116 Projected GLD)

#1 | CROIX DU NORD — Projected GLD: 116 | Projected LP: 100

CROIX DU NORD — #1 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (116 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
CROIX DU NORD — #1 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (116 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Cristian Demuro / Takashi Saito
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 2nd in G1 Takarazuka Kinen (113 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 121 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 117

If you want the horse with the highest sustained floor in Japan right now, start right here. Before his narrow neck defeat in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen (113 GLD), CROIX DU NORD reeled off back-to-back G1 victories in the Osaka Hai (117 GLD at 2000 meters) and the Tenno Sho Spring (a monster 121 GLD), and he already owns a Tokyo G1 victory from last year's Japanese Derby (115 GLD). Because he carried the full 58 kg (128 lbs) across all three of his 2026 starts, he faces zero weight shift coming into November 1, and his 116 Projected GLD Rating sits +4 points above our 5-year historical winner benchmark (112) and +3 points higher than EQUINOX projected entering the 2023 Tenno Sho Autumn (113).

The numbers tell me that CROIX DU NORD has the tactical versatility to sit in the garden spot stalking three or four lengths off the lead while the deep closers are still trying to sort out traffic. Picking up Cristian Demuro for the autumn campaign is another plus, and his high cruising speed makes him the standard-bearer at the top of the probables list.

#2 | MASQUERADE BALL — Projected GLD: 116 | Projected LP: 105

MASQUERADE BALL — #2 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (116 Projected GLD, 105 Late Pace)
MASQUERADE BALL — #2 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (116 Projected GLD, 105 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Christophe Lemaire / Takahisa Tezuka
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 2nd in HK G1 FWD QEII Cup (113 HKJC GLD / 116 JRA-Eq) & 7th in G1 King George (Ascot) | Peak Career GLD: 121

Here is where linking our Hong Kong and Japan databases pays for itself. If you only look at domestic JRA starts, MASQUERADE BALL hasn't appeared on a Japanese racecard since his head defeat in last November's G1 Japan Cup (121 GLD) carrying 56 kg as a three-year-old—which would trick a domestic-only lookup into docking him for an 11-month layoff and a 2 kg weight jump. In reality, after travel disruptions forced him to reroute from Dubai this spring, he shipped to Sha Tin on April 26 and finished a strong second in the G1 FWD Queen Elizabeth II Cup at 2000 meters, earning a 113 GLD Speed Figure on our Hong Kong scale (equivalent to a 116 GLD on the JRA G1 scale) while carrying 126 lbs (57 kg), before tackling the G1 King George at Ascot in July. Feeding that complete international campaign into our projections puts him right at a 116 Projected GLD Rating—a full +4 points higher than the 112 he projected when he won this exact race twelve months ago.

When it comes to pure closing velocity at Tokyo, nothing in this field touches him. He won last year's Tenno Sho Autumn with a ridiculous 32.3-second final 600 meters (108 Late Pace Figure) and leads all 2026 probables with a 105 Projected Late Pace Figure under Christophe Lemaire. Even coming off a 99-day freshening since Ascot, he and CROIX DU NORD sit in a virtual dead heat at the top of our early ratings.

#3 | SEIUN HADES — Projected GLD: 116 | Projected LP: 102

SEIUN HADES — #3 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (116 Projected GLD, 102 Late Pace)
SEIUN HADES — #3 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (116 Projected GLD, 102 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Hideaki Miyuki / Shinsuke Hashiguchi
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 1st in G2 Mainichi Okan (113 GLD, 104 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 117 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 115

When playing on numbers, you have to trust your process—and right now, SEIUN HADES matches the two headliners step-for-step with a 116 Projected GLD Rating. Why do our numbers love a seven-year-old coming out of the G2 Mainichi Okan? Because unlike typical Mainichi Okan winners who prep off a long summer layoff, SEIUN HADES stacked that 113 GLD Mainichi Okan victory (where he stalked in third and fired a 33.5-second final 600 meters for a 104 Late Pace Figure) directly on top of two 116 GLD Speed Figures in the G1 Yasuda Kinen (fourth, beaten a neck at Tokyo) and the G1 Osaka Hai (fifth at 2000 meters).

A couple of seasons ago, SEIUN HADES was a headstrong front-runner who would cook himself early in big G1 spots. Under Hideaki Miyuki this year, he has learned to ration his speed, sitting three lengths off the leader and pouncing in the lane. He shapes up as the biggest early value standout among the top contenders.

Tier 2: High-Upside Stalkers & Pace Contenders (112–115 Projected GLD)

#4 | REALIZE SIRIUS — Projected GLD: 115 | Projected LP: 101

REALIZE SIRIUS — #4 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (115 Projected GLD, 101 Late Pace)
REALIZE SIRIUS — #4 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (115 Projected GLD, 101 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Akihide Tsumura / Takahisa Tezuka
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 7th in G2 Mainichi Okan (112 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 121 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 116

Casual fans are going to glance at that '7th' in the G2 Mainichi Okan, shrug, and overlook REALIZE SIRIUS completely. That is a mistake. The 2026 Mainichi Okan finished in a tight blanket after a crawling 59.8-second opening 1000 meters, and REALIZE SIRIUS was beaten just 2.2 lengths while still recording a 112 GLD Speed Figure and a 102 Late Pace Figure from Gate 2.

Remember, this is the sole three-year-old on the probables list—which means he gets a massive 2 kg (4.4 lbs) weight-for-age allowance at 56 kg—and back in the spring he threw down a 121 GLD Speed Figure finishing second in the G1 Satsuki Sho at 2000 meters before posting a 116 GLD in the Japanese Derby. That elite classic foundation vaults his Projected GLD Rating to 115, making him the most dangerous sleeper in the field.

#5 | HO O BISCUITS — Projected GLD: 114 | Projected LP: 103

HO O BISCUITS — #5 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (114 Projected GLD, 103 Late Pace)
HO O BISCUITS — #5 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (114 Projected GLD, 103 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Yasunari Iwata / Takeshi Okumura
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 2nd in G2 Mainichi Okan (113 GLD, 103 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 119 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 112

We have seen this movie before. Two years ago, HO O BISCUITS finished second in the G2 Mainichi Okan with a 113 GLD Speed Figure, entered the 2024 Tenno Sho Autumn with a 110 Projected GLD Rating, controlled the pace from the front, and held on for third at big odds behind DO DEUCE while earning a 117 GLD Figure. On October 4, he ran the exact same play—wiring the Mainichi Okan field through a soft opening kilometer before getting nipped a nose at the wire by SEIUN HADES with another 113 GLD Figure and a 103 Late Pace Figure.

Because his overall speed baseline is higher today than it was in 2024, he enters next weekend with a 114 Projected GLD Rating—+4 points stronger than his 2024 pre-race projection—and profiles as the lone true front-runner (LDR) on the probables list. If Yasunari Iwata gets another uncontested lead, he can take this field a very long way.

#6 | DANON DECILE — Projected GLD: 112 | Projected LP: 100

DANON DECILE — #6 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (112 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
DANON DECILE — #6 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (112 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Keita Tosaki / Shogo Yasuda
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 3rd in G1 Takarazuka Kinen (112 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 120 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 114

DANON DECILE is the ultimate high-floor G1 grinder. Since winning the 2025 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan, the 2024 Derby winner has finished third in four consecutive domestic G1s: the 2025 Japan Cup (120 GLD), the 2025 Arima Kinen (114 GLD), the 2026 Osaka Hai (117 GLD), and the 2026 Takarazuka Kinen (112 GLD).

His 112 Projected GLD Rating sits right on the 5-year historical winner benchmark (112) and matches the pre-race projections of 2023 runner-up JUSTIN PALACE (112) and 2024 winner DO DEUCE (112). The main question mark is distance geometry: at a sharp 2000 meters at Tokyo, his steady 100 Late Pace Figure usually leaves him a length or two shy of explosive closers like MASQUERADE BALL or forward stalkers like CROIX DU NORD.

Tier 3: Live Board Threats & Deep Closers (111–112 Projected GLD)

#7 | GIOVANNI — Projected GLD: 112 | Projected LP: 101

GIOVANNI — #7 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (112 Projected GLD, 101 Late Pace)
GIOVANNI — #7 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (112 Projected GLD, 101 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Kohei Matsuyama / Haruki Sugiyama
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 1st in G3 Challenge Cup (105 GLD) & 5th in HK G1 FWD QEII Cup (109 HKJC GLD / 112 JRA-Eq) | Peak Career GLD: 119

Most horses coming out of a G3 late-summer handicap project in the mid-100s and fall short in the Tenno Sho Autumn, but GIOVANNI is the exception. Why does he hold a 112 Projected GLD Rating despite earning a modest 105 GLD in his G3 Challenge Cup victory? Because his back-class at 2000 meters is rock-solid: he ran a 114 GLD finishing second in the G2 Kinko Sho in March and shipped alongside MASQUERADE BALL to Sha Tin in April, finishing fifth in the G1 FWD Queen Elizabeth II Cup with a 109 HKJC GLD Figure (112 on the JRA G1 scale).

He clears our historical 110+ board threshold by 2 full points and owns five starts of seasoned 2000-meter form this year. He will likely need a career-best Late Pace spike to threaten the top trio, but his numbers are much stronger than his G3 prep suggests.

#8 | CHAMPAGNE COLOR — Projected GLD: 112 | Projected LP: 104

CHAMPAGNE COLOR — #8 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (112 Projected GLD, 104 Late Pace)
CHAMPAGNE COLOR — #8 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (112 Projected GLD, 104 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Hiroyuki Uchida / Tsuyoshi Tanaka
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 13th in G2 Mainichi Okan (111 GLD, 104 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 117 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 113

If you want a massive longshot whose underlying numbers are way better than his recent finishing positions, circle CHAMPAGNE COLOR. On paper, '13th in the Mainichi Okan' looks awful. Now look at the actual clock and the replay: breaking from Gate 11 in a slow-paced 59.8-second race where nobody up front stopped, CHAMPAGNE COLOR sat dead last (17-15-15), rocketed home in 33.6 seconds (104 Late Pace Figure), and crossed the wire just 2.8 lengths behind SEIUN HADES for a 111 GLD Speed Figure.

Even better, two starts back in the G1 Yasuda Kinen over this Tokyo turf course, he ran a 116 GLD Figure with a 105 Late Pace Figure (33.5-second final 600 meters). That gives him a 112 Projected GLD Rating and the second-highest Projected Late Pace Figure (104) among the top 14 probables, trailing only MASQUERADE BALL (105).

#9 | SHAKE YOUR HEART — Projected GLD: 111 | Projected LP: 100

SHAKE YOUR HEART — #9 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (111 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
SHAKE YOUR HEART — #9 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (111 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Yoshihiro Furukawa / Toru Miya
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 1st in G2 Sapporo Kinen (115 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 115 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 110

The 2026 G2 Sapporo Kinen was a legitimate speed test, and SHAKE YOUR HEART won it in 1:58.4 to earn a career-best 115 GLD Speed Figure—beating the 5-year Sapporo Kinen par (110) by +5 points. That race has already been validated twice at Tokyo: tenth-place finisher HO O BISCUITS and third-place finisher READINESS came right back out of Sapporo to run 2nd and 3rd in the G2 Mainichi Okan.

Because his earlier handicap runs sat in the 106–108 range, multi-start regression pulls SHAKE YOUR HEART's Tenno Sho projection to 111. Still, 111 clears our historical 110+ board threshold and matches the exact 111 pre-race projection that carried Sapporo Kinen winner PROGNOSIS into third place in the 2023 Tenno Sho Autumn.

Tier 4: The Sub-110 Cutline & Overhyped Names (109 Projected GLD)

#10 | READINESS — Projected GLD: 109 | Projected LP: 100

READINESS — #10 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
READINESS — #10 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 100 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Norihiro Yokoyama / Mitsugu Kon
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 3rd in G2 Mainichi Okan (112 GLD, 104 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 113 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 109

READINESS is an honest, improving four-year-old who backed up his third in the G2 Sapporo Kinen (113 GLD) with a closing third in the G2 Mainichi Okan (112 GLD, 104 Late Pace Figure off a 33.5-second final 600 meters). The catch is that three starts back he was still competing in the Listed Principal Stakes (102 GLD), which pulls his multi-start Projected GLD Rating down to 109.

Remember our historical rule of thumb: 14 of the last 15 Top-3 finishers in the Tenno Sho Autumn projected at 110 or higher entering the race. At 109, READINESS sits just underneath that cutline and also has to carry an extra 1 kg (57 kg to 58 kg) stepping into G1 weight-for-age company.

#11 | SAKURA FARREL — Projected GLD: 109 | Projected LP: 101

SAKURA FARREL — #11 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 101 Late Pace)
SAKURA FARREL — #11 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 101 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Daisuke Sasaki / Noriyuki Hori
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 2nd in G2 Sapporo Kinen (114 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 114 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 104

SAKURA FARREL ran the race of his life in August, pressing the pace in the G2 Sapporo Kinen and holding second by three-quarters of a length for a 114 GLD Speed Figure. Why does he project at 109 for the Tenno Sho Autumn while Sapporo Kinen winner SHAKE YOUR HEART projects at 111?

Because prior to that single afternoon in Hokkaido, SAKURA FARREL's four previous figures were 93 (in a 3-Win allowance), 104 (fifth in the G3 Hakodate Kinen), 95, and 92—and he has never raced on Tokyo Racecourse's left-handed homestretch. Our numbers treat single-race summer spikes without prior graded back-class with healthy skepticism.

#12 | REGALEIRA — Projected GLD: 109 | Projected LP: 97

REGALEIRA — #12 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 97 Late Pace)
REGALEIRA — #12 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 97 Late Pace)
  • Connections: Mirai Iwata / Tetsuya Kimura
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 4th in G2 All Comers (102 GLD, 93 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 116 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 110

REGALEIRA is one of the biggest names on the probables list, and fans who remember her 2500-meter Arima Kinen heroics at Nakayama (where she won in 2024 and finished second with a 116 GLD last December) will be tempted to forgive her fourth-place finish in the G2 All Comers on September 20. Our numbers tell a very different story.

The 2026 G2 All Comers was the weakest graded stakes prep of the entire Japanese autumn—won wire-to-wire in a crawl (2:16.9) by a former hurdle maiden (MEISHO GEKIRIN), earning a 103 GLD Figure that sat 9 points below the 5-year All Comers par (112). REGALEIRA managed only a 102 GLD Figure and a sluggish 93 Late Pace Figure (37.3-second final 600 meters), dragging her Tenno Sho projection down to 109 (-3 points below the historical winner benchmark) and a 97 Projected Late Pace Figure. Combine that with the fact that All Comers graduates have gone 0-for-the-last-5-years hitting the Tenno Sho board and that 2000 meters at Tokyo is too sharp for her grinding stamina profile, and she shapes up as the most vulnerable big name in the field.

#13 | ELTON BAROWS (ELTON BARROWS) — Projected GLD: 109 | Projected LP: 102

ELTON BAROWS (ELTON BARROWS) — #13 Ranked Tenno Sho Autumn Contender (109 Projected GLD, 102 Late Pace)

  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 9th in G2 Mainichi Okan (111 GLD, 105 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 115 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 107

Registered officially in JBIS/JRA databases as ELTON BAROWS (and frequently listed in English media as ELTON BARROWS), this six-year-old actually flashed a 33.3-second closing split (105 Late Pace Figure) from the back of the pack in the G2 Mainichi Okan to earn a 111 GLD Speed Figure in ninth. However, his prior mile runs in the G3 Sekiya Kinen (104 GLD) and G3 Shirasagi Stakes (105 GLD) anchor his overall projection at 109, and stretching out to 2000 meters against top-level G1 company is beyond his optimum.

#14 | TAGANO DUDE — Projected GLD: 109 | Projected LP: 99

  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 11th in G3 Challenge Cup (103 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 113 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 107

TAGANO DUDE picked up a surprise 113 GLD Speed Figure when finishing third behind SHAKE YOUR HEART in a fast renewal of the G2 Sapporo Kinen in August, which keeps his multi-start projection respectable at 109. Unfortunately, he regressed immediately to 11th in the G3 Challenge Cup (103 GLD) against lesser rivals and lacks the turn of foot (99 Projected Late Pace Figure) required to compete at Tokyo.

Tier 5: Outclassed Longshots & Class Jumpers (98–104 Projected GLD)

#15 | JUN BLOSSOM — Projected GLD: 104 | Projected LP: 105

  • Connections: Makoto Sugihara / Yasuo Tomomichi
  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 3rd in Listed October Stakes (99 GLD) | Peak Career GLD: 116 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 103

At age seven, JUN BLOSSOM still retains his trademark late kick (105 Projected Late Pace Figure), but his overall speed figures have eroded over the second half of 2026—posting 105, 104, and 99 GLD across his last three starts, culminating in a third-place effort in the Listed October Stakes over this course and distance on October 12. At a 104 Projected GLD Rating (-8 points below the historical winner benchmark), he is up against it here.

#16 | COSMO KURANDA — Projected GLD: 104 | Projected LP: 90

  • Profile Snapshot: 2026 Prep: 11th in G2 All Comers (94 GLD, 80 LP) | Peak Career GLD: 120 | 3-Start Avg GLD: 104

COSMO KURANDA ran a big 120 GLD Figure as a three-year-old in the 2024 Satsuki Sho, but his late-2026 form has tailed off badly. After fading to eighth in the G2 Sapporo Kinen (112 GLD), he stopped completely in the G2 All Comers at Nakayama—finishing 11th beaten 18.8 lengths with a 94 GLD Figure and a 41.6-second final 600 meters (80 Late Pace Figure).
